Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal mucosa. The signs of NEC are nonspecific but some generalized signs include:

Hypertension, absence of apnea, and ruddy skin color.

Hypertonia, tachycardia, and metabolic alkalosis.

Scaphoid abdomen, no residual with feedings, and increased urinary output.

Abdominal distention, feeding intolerance, and grossly bloody stools.
